Pull it all together

I want to share what I feel it takes to pull it all together and be at your very best when it really counts. After 47 years of involvement in wrestling, I have seen enough to know how much more all of us have inside. For example, on more than a few occasions, I have witnessed wrestlers enter the NCAA Wrestling Tournament with a losing record and win the tournament. I have seen what I would consider to be miraculous turnaround at mid season and at season ending competition. I have seen back up wrestlers and non-starters be inserted into the line up and win State and National Titles. All of us can perhaps recall stories about performances that have been absolutely mind-boggling. However, I would also bet that in each one of these situations, we could say that we knew that each one of those individuals had it in them.

The question here is what needs to happen for wrestlers to be at their very best when it will mean the most?

I want to share my thoughts on this topic. First, it is important to understand that there are some very simple measures that wrestlers can do to make sure he or she can perform at a peak level. First, I feel that it is important to understand that the healthier you are, the better you will be able to perform. There have been so many times when wrestlers have injured themselves right before major competition. I feel that the chance of getting injured can be kept to a minimum. The key here is to guard against being injured in the practice room. Often times, at the end of the season you will find yourself practicing with unfamiliar workout partners from other schools. I feel that this can be a major hazard.... (continued...)

WRESTLE WITHIN YOURSELF

Most are entering the most important phase of the season. This is the part of the season that separates the men from the boys. The truly determined will work hard to stay focused and do all they can to achieve the goals that they set at the beginning of the season.

To be at your best, there are many things that need to be considered as you wrestle in qualifying tournaments and prepare for state and national level competition. Peaking at the right time, conditioning, injury prevention, proper rest, proper nutrition and making sure that you are in the right place mentally are a few of the items that wrestlers need to be thinking about.

One consideration that I feel is often overlooked is that wrestlers need to work hard on WRESTLING WITHIN THEMSELVES. Sometimes it is good to have a strategy for specific opponents, but it is not a time to start learning new moves, taking unnecessary risk or changing things that have worked for you all season long.

I feel that wrestlers are much better off focusing on and continuing to work on what they have been working on all season. Continue to improve your weaknesses and make your strong points even stronger. Whenever you start to move outside of the technical areas that you are comfortable with, that is when mistakes and unnecessary risk can hurt your chances for success.... (continued...)

A single letter that helps to capture what we are about

I attended the Carl Adams Camp last summer in Boston with my son and found it to be one of the most inspiring experiences in my 30 years of being involved in the sport of wrestling.

The emphasis was on teaching and learning and the coaches and counselors took the time to get to know the campers on a personal level.

It was amazing to see N.C.A.A. Champions from the 60's to present, instructing kids, moving mats and enjoying being in a teaching environment.

A truly worthwhile experience —-and one coaches and athletes should take advantage of if possible. You will also be able to see one of the quickest wrestlers on the planet in Coach Adams.

I know that the camp will also be held at the Bolles School in Jacksonville.

19 Day Wrestling Institute & Inspirational Quote

We guarantee that you will grow more in this program than you will in an entire high school wrestling season.

We have spent over 15 years designing and refining the 19 Day Institute. We have had as many as 24 days and slightly less. We have found that the 19 day experience is perfect for what we are trying to accomplish. 24 days was a little too long. The students seemed to wear down in the last few days and struggle to stay engaged. We have found that the 19 day stay is perfect for the highly motivated student that is looking for an intense learning experience.

This program has been put together in a scientific manner. Our main goal is to focus on the individual as much as possible. That is why we evaluate every student on the first day of camp. We are the only camp that does that. We also evaluate students when they exit camp. This accomplishes three things. 1) It allows students to identify specific skills that they want to concentrate on. 2) This system really forces student to focus hard on the skills that they want to perfect and 3), the exit evaluation shows each student how much progress was achieved during camp. The evaluation is a written evaluation so each student can take the evaluation home.... (continued...)

Fantastic 12-Day program & the extra 20-30 percent

In my last blog, I indicated that I would talk about the different wrestling camp formats that we offer. I want to talk about our 12 day program.

The 12 day program is absolutely fantastic. It is loaded with features that make it one of the most attractive wrestling camps anywhere in the world. First, we were one of the first camps to design an evaluation system for all 12 day students. We use this system to evaluate students when they arrive and upon leaving camp. This process allows students to identify specific skills that they want to work on. Our camp structure is designed so that 12 day students can really work toward perfecting these skills while they are at camp.

Our sessions are structured so that students are learning skills during the morning session when they are most fresh. We break the skills down so that students learn the component parts. During our second session, we drill the skills that were learned in the morning. The students are closely monitored during this session so that they are performing the skills properly. This really helps to achieve the muscle memory that is necessary to perfect the various techniques.

During the evening session, campers get to try the skills that they are learning in a live session. The 3rd session each day is a combination of instruction and live wrestling. We are careful not to overdue the live. It is very important that we structure the sessions so that we can keep injuries to a minimum.... (continued...)

We offer one of the best wrestling camps available

This is the 31st annual year for our wrestling camp and I want to tell you why I feel we offer the best wrestling camp available. I will comment on this topic with my blog over the next couple months. I will also offer advice on how you can be at your best during this part of your season.

First, we have always looked for ways to improve our camp design and the different options that we offer. We offer programs for beginners, intermediate and advanced students. We also have an intensive component for the most serious students.

Each program is designed to maximize each campers learning experience. We invite you to take a good look at each one of the programs that we offer. We offer 5-day, 7-day, 12-day and a 19 day program.

Today's advise is to take a good look at your best performance this season. It was probably a performance that you were quite satisfied with. That is great. What if I told you that you were at least 20-30 percent better than that performance on your best day.

I have been involved in the sport for 47 years and have coached at the division one college level for the past 37 years. I have also worked with over 50,000 young wrestlers over my career. I have had an opportunity to see many individual transformations over my career.... (continued...)
