Carl Adams: Teaching the Right Stuff

Carl Adams is perhaps one of the most well known college wrestling coaches in the United States with 10 conference championships. He has 4 Coach of the Year awards to his name.

Before he turned to coaching he was a college wrestler himself, wrestling for Iowa State University. Over the years he has made major contributions to the sport of wrestling and has helped many students go on to win championship titles both at his alma mater and at Boston University.

Carl Adams began his wrestling career at Iowa State University as a middleweight wrestler where he graduated with a bachelor's degree in teaching and a master's degree in education. While on the Cyclones wrestling team he served as the team captain for two seasons and led them to two NCAA titles. His own personal record ended with 94 wins and 8 losses. He was also nominated All American three times and in his senior year was named team MVP.

After Carl Adams graduated from college he continued with his wrestling career with two AAU Freestyle championships in 73 and 75. He also won a silver medal at the Pan American Games and a 3rd place win at the World Games, sadly a shoulder injury kept him out of the 1976 Olympics. Even though he missed out on the Olympics, National Mat News still named him Top Middleweight of the Decade.

Carl Adams started his teaching career at his alma mater and spent six years as assistant coach. During this time the team won two NCAA team championships and took second place 3 times. From here he went to Rhode Island University to take the position of head coach and in his first two seasons took the team to victory in the New England Championships. These wins earned him Rookie Coach of the Year in 1980 and Coach of the Year in 1981. These wins brought Carl Adams to the attention of the athletic director at Boston University; he became head coach for the Terriers where he took the team to a 9-4 record and a New England title win. Six of his team then went on to the 1982 NCAA Tournament.

While at Boston University he has earned Conference Coach of the Year honors 4 times and has helped lead the team to an incredible 105-36-1 record that include winning their first 29 New England Conference matches. These coaching records have earned Carl Adams induction into the Midlands Championship Hall of Fame in 1992 for his three Midland titles in 1971-72 and 74 and his impressive 17-0 tournament record. In 2002 he was inducted into the Massachusetts Wrestling Hall of Fame for his 20 years of contributions to New England wrestling. He has also been inducted into the Iowa State University Hall of Fame and the Glen Brand Wrestling Hall of Fame, this coming in 2005.

For 29 years the Carl Adams World Class Wrestling Institute has offered 5, 7 and 12 day intensive training programs for wrestlers from all over the world. Their innovative training programs are designed to work with each student individually to bring out the very best in them.

Not only do they teach wrestling but they offer another unique feature: each class receives intensive S.A.T. prep classes because the institute, like Carl, firmly believes in a strong mind and a strong body.

Carl Adams is still leading the wrestling world when it comes to innovating, winning, and teaching the right stuff; his courses are also available on several videos for those who cannot attend his camps.
